Sittin' on Katie's Couch

couch

I sat on a comfy chair by the lit fireplace in Katie’s living room with my feet propped up on the footrest in front of me. Katie sat directly across from me on the couch. It was Christmas break and our kids were running through the freshly cut paths of the woods on their land while us mommas were staying warm and cozy inside.

I breathed in this moment.

We shared our hopes and fears for our kids.

We shared our dreams of how we could impact the lives of orphans.

We shared our writing experiences and how the call to write is HARD.

We shared hard junk from our past.

We laughed. We cried.

My quality time love tank was overflowing. I knew that what happened by the fire in that living room was an absolute gift. Two Midwest girls brought together by Middle Tennessee.

The next day, all I wanted to do was sit on Katie’s couch again.

I felt safe there. I felt loved.

It was an earthly glimpse of what it would be like to sit on a couch with my Heavenly Father. How gracious He is to show us His love through friends.

“Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

That very same morning before I ended up in front of the fire in Katie’s living room I was battling doubt, sadness, and negativity. This would be my first test in 2019 to see if I could still show up even though I felt anything but doing just that.

In those sweet moments with my friend, I felt God pursuing my heart. He was asking me to not allow those feelings, the lies, to overtake me. To show up when God asks me to even when I don’t feel like it.

As I write this post, I think about friendships throughout my past that started on couches and grew deeper on those same couches. It’s been a constant theme throughout my life.

God uses couches as a place to wrestle and heal. A place where He can show up through the kindness of a friend like Katie.

Let's make room for these couch moments with our friends. When we show up, God lovingly shows up too and chases our hearts to remember that He doesn’t want us to journey alone.

Who needs to sit on your couch today?

Warm up that coffee pot, or Keurig, and invite them over. You’ll be so glad you took the time.
